Electric Vehicle - basics

Hello Readers,

no doubt you all are car enthusiastics!

Let me start with the history of EV. You guys might have already read about "who killed the EV" story, if not then read it here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Who_Killed_the_Electric_Car%3F

The workings of an electric vehicle (EV) are very simple. Electricity moves from the power source, which is probably a wall socket, through a charger, and into the battery pack. When the ignition key is turned, the main contactor closes, allowing electricity to move from the batteries to the speed controller. As the throttle is depressed, the potbox sends a signal to the controller
telling it how much electricity to release to the motor. The speed of the motor varies depending on how much electricity it gets. The motor is connected to the
transmission by an adaptor plate. The power goes from the motor, through the transmission, and out to the wheels as in a gas car. That's it in a nutshell.

So, my plan is to convert Maruti 800 into electric vehicle.

what minimum do I need to do this -->
  1. vehicle, with transmission, chassis, brakes, steering, suspension etc... means except engine everything in good condition.
  2. AC/DC motor, need to decide on motor rating. I think 10-12 hp will be good enough. Motor should not weigh more than 60 kgs?? any electrical expert out there, please correct me if i am making any mistake. I'll prefer a DC motor as controlling is very easy as per my current minimum understandings.
  3. Battery pack. 6-8 batteries each of 8/12V, i think Li-ion will be very costly affair, I should go with lead acid conventional batteries which Reva uses in current car.
  4. Invertor or DC-DC convertor.
  5. Potentiometer, to link between accelerator pedal and motor controller?
  6. also i need some mechanical arrangement to connect motor with transmission, motor mounting, battery pack, motor starter etc... i'll update this list once i get more details.
